Finding a lawyer

I had a hearing in June in which an indicated report was determined unfounded. My life and my daughter's was turned upside down to say the least. I am trying to find a lawyer to represent me in bringing suit against somebody for the years of emotional and financial abuse that was inflicted on us but I don't know where to start. I have tried doing a search on the internet and have had no success. I even contacted Johnny Cochran's firm. They sent me a nice letter stating that they don't handle such cases but that I shouldn't let it go because the statute of limitations runs out on these things. I am about an hour north of New York City and I think that would be the best place to go but like I said, I don't know how to begin. Anyone have any ideas?
