Article on msnbc.com - States wrestle with medicating foster

Postby Mary Garner » Tue Mar 13, 2007 1:18 pm

I just ran across this article on www.msn.com about foster kids and medication use/abuse. Too bad they didn't point out the real problem...Too many kids are being taken away and put in foster care for no good reason to begin with!!!

Here's the info and the link for the article:

States wrestle with medicating foster kids

Coast to coast, states are wrestling with how best to treat the legions of emotionally troubled foster children in their care. Critics contend that powerful psychiatric drugs are overused and say poor record-keeping masks the scope of the problem.

quoting article

“Children who are having normal reactions to the trauma of being separated from their families are often misdiagnosed or overdiagnosed as suffering from psychiatric problems, and the system is too quick to medicate,” said Mike Arsham of the Child Welfare Organizing Project. “It’s a chemical sledgehammer that makes children easier to manage.”

maybe if the children weren't traumatized by being taken by CPS this wouldn't be happening. we are dealing with a six year old right now that is still in foster care and is being told by the foster mother that she must call her mom and that she must call her mother "Cody" and the only father she has ever know "AAron" it is sick and we are having her investigated.
