Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy

http://www.rebt.cc/_wsn/page11.html

It is often said that a single quote from Epictetus can sum up the flavour of REBT, as follows: "People are not upset by what happens to them. They are upset by the *attitude* that they adopt towards the things that happen to them".

- - - - - - - - - -

I get this kind of therapy at home all the time.

I have always called this "therapy" by another name:

"There is nothing wrong with the situation,

there is something wrong with your REACTION to the situation.

If the faucet drips, if the car rattles, if finances are mismanaged, if the grass needs cutting, if the dog is annoying, etc.

then I hear, "There is nothing wrong with the situation.

There is something wrong with your reaction to the situation."

But if we are driving downtown, and other people drive crazy, somebody has a reaction to the situation.

So I reply, "There is nothing wrong with the situation, there is something wrong with your reaction to the situation."

"You KNOW that people drive crazy downtown."
