Neb. Family On Run Feared Kids Would Be Taken

Published: Saturday, April 4, 2009 12:28 AM CDT

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities believe a northeast Nebraska couple fled the state with their children out of fear that social services workers would take the kids away from them.

That’s the reason Rowena Schade gave her mother in a Friday phone call, Knox County Sheriff Jim Janecek said.

Matthew and Rowena Schade and their children, ages 8 and 11, have not been seen since March 20, when a Knox County deputy sheriff interviewed them in their Creighton home about allegations of abuse.

A search for a family of four in the rugged Black Hills area of South Dakota ended Friday after authorities found a stolen truck that they believe the family used to return to their home state. The truck was found ditched in brush near Brunswick, Neb., in Antelope County.

Janecek said in a news release that Rowena Schade told her mother, Sandra Epstein, that the family retrieved a red Jeep they own after they came back to Nebraska.

She also told Epstein that they had “another plan” and that if things didn’t work out, they would go “where no one would ever find them,” the news release said.

Janecek did not immediately return a phone message left at his office.

Earlier Friday, Janecek declined to discuss the search strategy in Nebraska.

“The best thing they can do is contact us and end this before we have more problems arise,” he said.

The deputy who interviewed the family in March “made an offer of help and counseling. No arrests were made and no injuries were observed,” Janecek said.

The Schades are believed to have left Creighton the same day.

One of the family’s vehicles was found Tuesday about 400 miles from Creighton, near Silver City, S.D. The stolen vehicle found Friday in Antelope County, next to Knox County, belongs to the Silver City volunteer fire department and typically is used in fighting brush fires.

As many as 25 people searched for the Schades in the Black Hills, but the search was scaled back Thursday after Matthew Schade called his father and said the family was OK and wanted to be left alone. The search stopped at nightfall because it became too difficult to navigate the loose rock and melting snow at nearly 5,000 feet in elevation.

nice to know this police department of worthless useless idiots has the abundance of time and resources to scour the countryside for a family who in their own words , were not arrested or charged with a CRIME and tht they saw NO signs on the kids , that they have time to hunt these people down like prey. For What? Good for them , I hope they NEVER find them , these people ran before officer do - gooder could call in the law bending cps intruders into their lives , we all know they will get them though for medical and educational neglect if those children are not in school , which is infuriating , hope they have the mindset to think of this and documument some home schooling , we should if we home school (just a thought ) not only get whatever you need for the school board to do that ,but record some lessons :0 thanks for sharing this story , can't even get into words how much it totally pisses me off . ~Kelz~
