Parents who lost custody of sick girl await new test results
A Texas couple is battling the state as teen undergoes cancer treatment

AGUA DULCE - A couple who lost custody of their cancer-stricken 13-year-old daughter because they refused certain treatments said they would hear results of new medical tests this week.

Since a judge in Corpus Christi ruled that Ed and Michele Wernecke could be endangering Katie Wernecke's life, the parents have been allowed to accompany Katie to medical procedures but say they have had little other contact. Katie has been in the custody of Child Protective Services since June 4.

Ed Wernecke said his daughter seemed to be getting depressed after bone marrow tests and biopsies but was kept mostly out of touch.

"No e-mail, no phone," he said Monday. "She's just up in a home somewhere in Houston."

He said he was working out the details to "make some statements" to the media this week with the Texas Center for Family Rights, which assists families in battles against CPS.

The case has drawn national attention as a clash between parental rights in a child's medical care and the state's charge to protect children.

Katie was diagnosed in January and underwent chemotherapy. Doctors recommended that she follow that treatment with radiation, but her parents refused for fear it would do more harm than good, Ed Wernecke has said.

At a hearing this month, they learned the cancer had returned, as doctors had warned.

CPS spokesman Darrell Azar said Ed Wernecke's claim that Katie wasn't being allowed enough contact with the family was unfounded.

"We have given both parents ample opportunities to visit with Katie both in person, by phone and by e-mail," he said. "In foster care Katie has daily access to a computer and can e-mail her parents any time she cares. She also has daily opportunities to call her parents, which sometimes she chooses not to do."

Azar said that in light of Ed Wernecke's comments, CPS would encourage Katie to phone home every night at 8 p.m.

He added that CPS also made arrangements for Katie to attend church with her parents.

Another Invasive Biopsy
Katie is at M.D. Anderson early in the morning being prepared for a new invasive surgery. Surgery began about 8:30 am and lasted till about 2 pm. The plan was to make a small incision between the ribs on the left side of the upper chest and sample the tumor using a small biopsy prob fitted with a camera. Things apparently didn't go well and they ended up making a total of 3 holes between the ribs on the back. Finally the doctor makes a 5 inch incision between those same 2 ribs and reaches her hand in to feel for the area of tumor desired. The doctor removed over 90% of the thymus gland and sends it to the lab for a quick analysis.

The sample was frozen and sliced and looked at under a microscope. There was no cancer found. The entire sample will be sectioned and analysed in the next five days. We were allowed to see Katie after she woke up in the intensive care section of the hospital. Katie was burning up with fever and had ice packs on her head. She was in excruciating pain. What should have been a simple and almost painless procedure of taking a small sample with the camera probe turned into a disaster. Removing the thymus was not called for or discussed in the procedure. This was a major surgery and it turned into a disaster. Michele remained by her side in intensive care. Katie was very disappointed and broken-hearted that CPS would not allow Edward (dad) to stay in the room.

This poor girl shouldn't have to go through such pain.And especially when it keeps comming back negative.When are they going to stop causeing her this pain?

That's a bunch of bull and we all know it!! They won't let us talk to our granddaughter so they can warp her mind. We all know what happens to the person kidnapped. They begin to have sympathy for their kidnappers and eventually go to the kidnappers side. The Patty Hearst is still fresh in my mind even though it happened eons ago.

Here is an article on the thymus.

We were told by drs. that it was dangerous to remove the thymus from our granddaughter. They noticed something on her thymus and would not touch it. The thymus is also important for the immune system. Also radiation treatments are dangerous for this organ of your body. Not only that the removal can make you susecptible to cancer.

The way I see it they have a two fold purpose in their removal. One it is a well known fact that radiation is dangerous to the thymus....remove it so she can't die from radiation treatments. Two we can make her susceptible to cancer by removing it and the more likely she will have a relapse of cancer being as she already had it.

Therefore we have accomplished what we needed to do to prove these parents wrong.
