Shadows of Our Former Selves
Written by Jeremiad, November 20, 2013

Shadows of our former selves
Stack neatly on the open shelves,
So all the world can clearly see
Us drown in mediocrity.

Vaguely I remember when
(We were so stout and supple then,
The days before we grew so thin)
To doubt or cry would be a sin.

Ah, we were so fair and strong!
Climbed hills and crossed the valleys long;
We preached the truth unwavering
With all the blessings it would bring.

Truth still stands, although we fold
Like a garment, growing old:
Fading in fashion, lost in time,
Epitaph in pitiful rhyme.

Here today, gone tomorrow!
Life is full of pain and sorrow.
Languishing in valleys of loss;
Trapped on mountains too high to cross.

Darkness comes, the light now fades.
Light of my eyes, who drew the shades?
Shades of night extinguish all hope;
The lamp is out: end of the rope.

Listen! Through darkness it comes...
Faithful prayers like distant drums.
The prayers of saints...don’t you hear?
The dark tricks eyes, but not the ear!

Prayers of saints rising up,
(Raise high the intercessor’s cup,
Pouring out petitions and praise!)
Worshiping the Ancient of Days.

Hear them now praying for me!
Bearing my burdens to the Tree,
Laying them there in fervent prayer,
O Song of Hope that fills the air!

I feel strength rise within me—
There is a promised victory!
These saints are faithful evidence
Of God’s loving Providence.

Why fear darkness of the night?
Shadows reveal the present Light!
That Light is Christ who sets us free;
Our hope springs new eternally!

Out of miry depths we climb,
Heading home one step at a time.
Safe on the Rock, not on the shelves—
No more shadows of former selves!

I like that. It states what I've been feeling lately.

There's safety on that Rock.

I cannot tell you, LindaJM, how important church family has been throughout this entire ordeal (nine months and counting). No, not the gossiping, back-biting kind of church, but the church friends that love us as a family. It is hard not to choose sides, calling it "discernment" and "righteous judgment"; but to stand behind a family during their hardship, and love all equally is true Christian character. I have seen this in action, where I would not want anyone to turn against my child because she falsely accused me; instead, I appreciate them loving my daughter as I do, for who she is, and all that she will become as she receives healing and achieves her full potential!

I'm glad to hear you have a good church. There's nothing quite so comforting other than the Holy Spirit Himself.
