Evidence-Based Practice in Child Welfare:
Challenges and Opportunities

Client involvement in making decisions regarding services they will receive and
programs in which they will participate is a key element of evidence-based practice (Gambrill,
1999). Social workers need to seek out practice related research findings regarding the important
practice decisions and share the results of their search with clients. A social worker should make
sure that the intervention, service, or theory directing his or her work with a client is grounded in
up-dated knowledge about what has been proven to be the most effective for the specific client
situation. The social worker works with the client to assure that she/he understands the benefits
and deficits of the proposed interventions and the extent to which the research applies to his or
her individual situation.
